HCFA published in the September 12 Federal Register a proposed rule covering the 2001 fee schedule for ambulance services. Under the fee schedule, suppliers of ambulance services will be paid a set amount based on the provided service. This payment approach is a dramatic departure from the 2000 fee schedule, in which suppliers are paid based on their charges or costs.
