THE OVERSUPPLIED sulfuric acid market faces low pricing and weak demand. The depressed phosphate market is exacerbating sulfuric's weakness, and acid producers warn that unless end markets improve, the industry's problems will continue.
Sulfuric acid pricing has spiraled downward for two years. Current Tampa spot prices are $15 to $20 per short ton, according to PentaSul Inc. (PSI), a Houston-based consultancy. Although an improvement over $11 at the beginning of the year, current prices are well below their levels during the first quarter of 1998, when spot prices were $28 to $32. Two years before that, spot prices were nearly $40.
