THE ASSIMILATION of millions of immigrants from strikingly different worlds into one society is a story that defines America. In the shadow of this American story is another: the struggle to include millions of nonimmigrant minorities--African-Americans, American Indians, Latinos--within the mainstream of society. The first story is a celebration of diversity that reveals America as a haven for religious, cultural, and political difference.
