Nov. 18--When Intermec Technologies revealed plans to phase out manufacturing at its Cedar Rapids locations in July, it was hard to tell if the company's warm words about its employees would translate into action, or if another coldly impersonal downsizing move was in store.
The maker of mobile business computing solutions, which has about 540 local employees, said it would eliminate about 130 jobs over a nine-month period because it was merging its manufacturing operations into a bigger plant in Everett, Wash.
