WASHINGTON -- Apparel and accessories store sales in October jumped a seasonally adjusted 1 percent against September to $12.19 billion, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.

During the same period, sales at department stores, as well as general merchandise stores, rose 0.4 percent to $26.79 billion and $34.5 billion, respectively.

Compared with October 1999, apparel and accessories store sales last month posted a robust 8 percent gain, as department store sales increased 7.2 percent and general merchandise sales rose 7.7 percent.
