When Windy, a shepherd-collie mix, turned 11 on Nov. 10, she celebrated with a custom-baked birthday cake from Three Dog Bakery, a Kansas City-based bakery for dogs.
"She eats a healthy diet. I usually don't go overboard," KSHB-TV, meteorologist Gary Lezak says of his on-air weather dog. "I usually only give her gourmet treats on special occasions."
With an estimated 58 million pet owners in the United States, a recent survey by Pet Food Industry magazine found 64 percent of consumers have purchased premium dog food products in the last year, a category that has been growing at a rate of 20 percent annually since 1996.
