In hopes of freezing and killing thousands of zebra mussels that have invaded the lake, officials in Rochester, Minn., began Monday to draw down Lake Zumbro.
Rochester Public Utilities, which owns a dam that produces electricity, is releasing enough water so that the lake's water levels will drop about 5 feet during the next week or two, exposing all the mussels that live in shallow water.
"I'm not convinced we're going to eradicate them," said Gary Montz, zebra mussel program coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "But by knocking out a large number of them in shallow waters, we might slow down their explosive growth."
