Nov. 22--It's already three years outdated, but the Census Bureau's estimates for income and poverty indicates that San Joaquin County's poverty level ranks 20th among 58 California counties.

An estimated 18.8 percent of the county's residents, or nearly 102,000 people, had poverty-level incomes in 1997, according to Census Bureau figures being released today.

Statewide, 16 percent of Californians, or nearly 5.2 million people, were living at the poverty level.

The highest rate was in Tulare County, with 27.9 percent of residents there in poverty, followed by 25.6 percent in Fresno County and 25.4 percent in Merced County.
