By late 1995 the Spanish companies had invested US$251mil in Brazil holding the 13th position in foreign investors ranking, according to the Central Bank. As of the privatization of the electric power and telecoms sectors the investment increased. Between 1996 and October 2000 the Spanish companies invested US$16.778bil, surpassed only by the US with US$23.914bil. The Spanish acquired telecoms carriers in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo. Also took over electric power transmission and distribution companies in Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Sergipe, Rio Grande do Norte and Mato Grosso do Sul.
