A van load of protesters from Madison weren't planning to cause any mischief as they drew attention to the School of the Americas. But one wrong turn, and they were banned from Fort Benning for life.
Meanwhile, nine other protesters from Madison who traveled separately crossed the line onto the base on purpose and were detained and banned.
Turning onto the Georgia military base was an accident, but military police ordered the 13 protesters to leave the base and never return, said Katie Stefanski, a recent UW-Madison graduate who led the delegation. The School of the Americas, a training site for Latin American soldiers, is located on the base.
