SANTA FE, N.M. -- It's tempting for allergy and asthma sufferers to seize on any weapon in the fight against armies of dust mites and indoor animal dander.
But not all antiallergen tools on the market have been tested, and some are downright ineffective, Dr. Laurie J. Smith said at a pediatric conference sponsored by Symposia Medicus. She offered these tried-and-true tips:
* Dust Mites. The most common allergen and the prime allergen in asthma, dust mites like dark, warm, moist places. They abound in mattresses, pillows, and box springs. Washing bedding with cold water reduces mite allergen concentrations 100-fold, but the mites survive and reaccumulate ...
