Transplant patients may be able to save up to $2,000 annually by using new generic substitutions for immunosuppressive drugs.
Expenses average $100,000 in the first year for the more than 12,000 patients who undergo kidney transplants each year and Medicare patients are left to pay for their own immunosuppressive therapy after 44 months, according to information from the National Kidney Foundation and the United Network for Organ Sharing.
A total of 18,998 kidney, liver and heart transplants were performed in the United States in 1998. In addition to 12,166 kidney transplants, there were 4,487 liver transplants and 2,345 heart transplants.
