As use of irradiation grows, the need for packaging materials that can be used with irradiated foods will grow.
Scientific studies conducted over the past 50 years indicate that the benefits of food irradiation outweigh the risks, according to a recently released General Accounting Office (GAO) report. The primary benefit of food irradiation, according to the GAO report, is that it is a safe, effective tool for reducing foodborne pathogens. Within approved dosages, irradiation has been shown to destroy at least 99.9% of common foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni, E. coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes.
