Article: LEATHER EXPORTS UP, BUT EXPORT EARNING DECLINES.

Indonesia's leather exports rose 16.5% to 9,007 tons in 1999 from 7,730 tons in 1998, but the export value shrank 14.4% from US$ 79.3 million to US$ 67.9 million. Despite the decline in prices, producers are prompted to increase exports because of the decline in sales on the domestic market and the gain from the soaring value of the dollar against rupiah. The sharp fall of the rupiah in 1998 boosted exports to reach 7,730 tons or a 438.3% increase from 1997's export figure of 1,436 tons. The export value in 1998, however, rose only 10.6% to US$ 79.3 million from US$ 37.6 million in 1997. The prices in 1998 dropped to around US$ 10,253 per ton from US$ 266,196 in 1997.
