This issue of American Studies International grows out of the work of the American Studies Association International Women's Task Force, established in 1996 to foster a global network of scholars working at the intersections of American Studies and Women's Studies. The essays draw upon papers presented at annual meetings of the American Studies Association (1996 Kansas City, 1997 Washington, D.C., 1998 Seattle) and the biennial meeting of the European Association for American Studies (1997 Lisbon).
