Feminist Studies and American Studies have made a difference in the academy (or, more precisely, in the North-American academy):(1) their oppositional and critical stance vis-a-vis institutional and disciplinary rigidity and compartmentalization has been a challenge to the established disciplines,(2) with far-reaching implications for the production of knowledge.
