HONOLULU -- In the late 1930s, Hawaii called and tourists answered. Before air travel, San Francisco-based Matson luxury liners carried well-to-do visitors across the Pacific, along with their servants and steamer trunks. Travelers soaked up the sun and the Hawaiian spirit on the beaches of Waikiki.
Those not wealthy enough to sail to the islands came here by way of airwaves.
