Timor is just one tiny island among 17,508 in the Indonesian archipelago, but it has been a source of conflict since the Dutch and Portuguese first began fighting over it in the 15th century.
The Dutch won the western part, the Portuguese the eastern part, and East Timor remained a Portuguese colony after Indonesia won independence in 1945.
Portuguese missionaries converted the East Timorese to Catholicism, thus putting them at odds with Indonesia's Muslim majority. And a Portuguese military junta abandoned them in 1975, along with Lisbon's African colonies, after overthrowing the civilian government there.
