Symptoms of a new sports-enhancing drug fad are creeping up on metro-area high schools, like the isolated sneezes that precede a cold.
First introduced to the United States in the 1920s, ephedrine has enjoyed a surge of popularity nationwide in the past four or five years, especially among young people.
Locally, some high school athletes have been experimenting with ephedrine, the Denver Rocky Mountain News found after interviewing dozens of football players.
Most of the experimentation is going on in suburban schools.
