A slight grin spreads from beneath the bushy gray moustache on Gordon Parks' weathered face as he tells the camera how he was born dangling over the edge.
In 1912, Parks says matter-of-factly, he was born dead. The youngest of 15 children of a Kansas farmer and his wife, he was revived when the doctor dipped the seemingly stillborn infant into a tub of ice.
"I've been screaming ever since," says Parks, who at 88 appears as the timelessly endearing subject of "Half Past Autumn: The Life and Works of Gordon Parks," an HBO documentary that airs at 9 p.m. ET Thursday.
