It's the occasion skiers all over the Great Lakes region have been waiting for -- the first downhill ski runs are open for the season in Michigan. The western Upper Peninsula is already measuring this season's snowfall in double digits with more on the way; and Michigan's Lower Peninsula snow belts are not far behind. Significant lake- effect snowfall is anticipated in counties along the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior shores over the next couple of days, with snow showers and flurries predicted through Friday.
