Howard Upton was chief staff executive of the Petroleum Equipment Institute from the organization's inception in 1951 until his retirement in mid-1987. He is a lawyer, a former board member of a Fortune-500 computer manufacturing company, and a writer. Upton maintains an office in his home at 5133 E. 25th Court Tulsa, Ok 74114 (918) 744-8908 In the early 1970s, an oil company district engineer quit his job and went into business for himself as an oil equipment distributor. Five years later, his new company was a solid success. I asked why he thought he had done so well.
