THE STORY (written by E. J. Dionne Jr. of the New York Times) is that George Bush, having made his peace with the American Right, is now free to tomcat among Republican liberals, if the expression is still permitted. The idea, we gather, is this: George Bush needed to nail down the conservative vote hard and fast, and did so in New Orleans. But now he needs to go after the big swing vote, the socalled Reagan Democrats, whose allegiance to Reagan gave the GOP 49 states the last time around.
