Denver began the year 1900 with bells, whistles and prayers.
That New Year's Eve fell on a Sunday, and while some revelers took to the streets, others flocked to churches, which tolled their bells at midnight.
``Perhaps there were more people on the streets after midnight than at any time in the history of Denver,'' the Denver Times reported.
The noise made an impression on 3-year-old Thomas Hornsby Ferril, who would become the state's poet laureate nearly 80 years later.
He and his older sisters were allowed to stay up late that night at their Victorian home on Downing Street. ...
