AURORA -- A breach between city officials and the Civil Service Commission, which oversees police discipline, is widening.
The latest signs of trouble: The city recently took the unusual step of appealing a board decision in court. And, a commissioner removed for bias is suing the city.
Since Verne Saint Vincent was appointed police chief in 1995, the five-member board has overturned eight of 17 discipline decisions brought to it on appeal. Two are pending.
In two other cases, the officer either withdrew the appeal or an agreement was reached that resulted in the officer's resignation.
