State senators voted today to retain Sand Creek on the list of battles on a Civil War monument at the Colorado Capitol, even though it was a massacre rather than a fight.
Last year, lawmakers voted unanimously to remove the name. But on Friday, state senators changed their minds - in large part because descendants from the Indian men, women and children who were slaughtered there asked them.
Sen. Bob Martinez, D-Commerce City, who led last year's fight, said a new marker or monument will be placed nearby to explain Sand Creek.
``Those of you who know your history know it wasn't a battle or an engagement,'' Martinez said. ...
