SAN DIEGO -- If he stays healthy and his calculations are correct, sometime in late May or early June, the quest will end for Tony Gwynn. He'll become the 22nd player in major league history to reach 3,000 hits and the first National Leaguer since Lou Brock in 1979.
When the countdown ends - Gwynn needs 71 hits - flashbulbs will erupt and the San Diego Padres game will be stopped, even if they're playing on the road. Should the milestone occur at Qualcomm Stadium - the Padres begin a homestand June 4 - Gwynn knows there will be utter bedlam.
