The average telecommunications startup could not simply waltz out and merge - almost as equals - with a $31 billion, 54,000-employee regional Bell telephone company.

But Hamilton, Bermuda-based Global Crossing Ltd. isn't a run-of-the-mill startup.

Run by a stellar cast of former Fortune 500 execs, Global Crossing has raised roughly $4 billion during the past two years, including an $800 million bond offering, a wildly successful initial public stock sale that raised $400 million and a sale of preferred stock that brought in another $500 million.
