How did two sixth-grade girls become go passionate about water quality in the Las Animas River, I wondered as I judged their science project at the recent Colorado Science and Engineering Fair at Colorado State University. More than 250 anxious kids from all over the state were all dressed up, fidgeting, yet trying to appear composed, confident and even ingenious as judges filed past their exhibits. With any luck, some of those judges would want to know more about their efforts and nominate them for blue ribbons, college scholarships and summer jobs.
