They are this summer's phenomenon - the phenomenally successful U.S. women's soccer team that will play China for the world championship Saturday before an 85,000-plus sellout at the Rose Bowl.
They have brought fans into the stadiums, average attendance 64,000 over five games, and they have brought something badly needed back into big-time sports - a sense of fun. The women players genuinely like their sport - only a handful will get rich from it - and they genuinely like each other. Indeed, the women mock their own togetherness in Nike commercials.
