Robert Evans knew he was an artist the moment his second-grade teacher asked for a volunteer to draw a butterfly on the chalkboard and the entire class pointed toward him.
``I got up and I drew this beautiful butterfly,'' the Denver resident says. ``That was kind of a catalyst for me.''
Almost 40 years later, Evans, 45, still has that drive and continues to volunteer his artistic prowess. Evans is one of many local fine and performing artists participating in the 13th Annual Denver Black Arts Festival, Friday through Sunday at the City Park Esplanade.
