My grandfather was drafted into the army while still a young boy. He served for twenty-five years, and then bought some land in Welnianka and got married. At that time only a Jew who had served in the army had the right to purchase land. Grandfather said that money always loses its value--but with land it's the reverse. And that you can easily take money away from a person--but not land. But my mother's brothers did not want that land and one after another they left for America. When Grandfather died my grandmother also left, taking with her Mama's little sister. Mama stayed behind, because she got married.
