When I was a young boy, I loved to read Al Capp's comic strip, L'il Abner. I think Capp's rendition of Daisy Mae had something to do with it, but I wouldn't want to confirm that in writing. L'il Abner was a hillbilly from the Ozarks. A sort of '50s Jehthro Clampett. Abner could barely read, but he followed the antics of his own favourite comic strip, Fearless Fosdick. It wasn't until much later that I realized Fearless was Capp's not so sly dig at Chester Oswald's Dick Tracy (The two cartoonists despised each other. Oswald thought Capp was an uneducated boor and Capp thought Oswald was a fascist thug. They were both right.) Fearless was a detective with a big city police ...
