WASHINGTON -- Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt announced in May that 29 endangered species had recovered so well they could come off the endangered species list - proof, he said, ``the Endangered Species Act works.''
It turns out five of those species hadn't recovered. Rather, they had become extinct.
A conservative group that opposes mainstream environmentalism reported Babbitt's choreographed announcement in Gill, Mass., was based on ``a big public affairs blunder.''
