MATADI, Congo -- Government-allied troops patrolled the streets of this strategic port town Sunday, after driving out insurgents in a major blow to their hopes of ousting President Laurent Kabila.
Angolan soldiers took control of Matadi over the weekend when rebels put up only light resistance then fled into the surrounding forest, Deputy Interior Minister Faustin Munene said Sunday.
The port's capture follows several recent gains by the government, which has turned the tables on the rebels, who just weeks ago seemed poised to take the capital, Kinshasa, about 215 miles northeast of here.
