Denver students are gradually showing up better-prepared to learn when school opens in the fall.
But no grades from second to ninth started this year at the proper grade level in reading, according to results of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills given in early September. Five grades were four to eight months behind and three were one to three back.
The bottom line: On average, students in Denver Public Schools are still behind in crucial reading skills - but not as far back as they used to be.
