Lisl Auman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for a murder that occurred when she was in police custody. It is a harsh sentence - far harsher than those imposed on many men and women in this state who personally wield the gun, knife, club or automobile that kills a blameless victim.
Yet Auman's sentence could have been less severe, we now know, had she and her defense team been willing to accept a reasonable penalty for her crime. They weren't. Instead, they gambled that Auman's jury would acquit her on the first-degree murder charge. And they lost.
