Dealing Al Gore a serious defeat in his overtime quest for the presidency, a Florida judge said Monday that there is no substantial evidence that the vice president got more votes, and denied his urgent plea to overturn his election loss in the state to Republican George W. Bush.
The dramatic ruling in a hushed Florida courtroom shot down Gore's attempt to recount disputed ballots that he insists hold enough votes to overcome Bush's slender lead and propel him to victory.
