The notion that there might be a perfect, all-around gun dog breed, it seems, is more than a dream of many upland and waterfowl hunters.
It is a catalyst that will turn gentle dog handlers into impassioned orators.
Is there a perfectly versatile gun dog? One that will hunt and retrieve quail and pheasants on land, ducks and geese in icy water and across vast cornfields?
(Keeping in mind, of course, that old Rover also must be a faithful chum at home, with a winning smile and gentle disposition, good with kids. Licks the family cat, that sort of thing.)
