AURORA -- Despite a 54 percent increase in homicide and 56 percent leap in auto theft in 1997, Aurora remains the fourth-safest city of its size in the nation, according to figures released Friday.

``Violent crime did go up, but it's up minimally, particularly if you compare it to five years ago,'' said Mayor Paul Tauer.

Violent crime overall increased nearly 3 percent in 1997. Rapes went up by 17 percent, while robberies dropped by 13 percent. Aggravated assaults went up 10 percent.

There were 17 homicides in 1997 compared to 11 in 1996, five of which remain unsolved. Auto thefts ...
