To paraphrase vaudevillian Fred Allen, California is a great place to live if you are a fan of the state's small wineries. Elsewhere, your local wine merchant and his wholesalers, abetted by state legislatures, may be working to see that you never get those wines.
At the prodding of wine distributors, retailers and tax-hungry legislators, laws have been passed prohibiting out-of-state wineries from shipping to customers. Direct shipment, they assert, hurts the traditional distribution system and robs states of taxes.
