Indonesia is less a country than a small universe, the world's fourth most populous nation strewn across thousands of miles of islands.

Indonesia has never been a true democracy. It was a Dutch colony, and then ruled by one semi-benevolent dictator, Sukarno, who was ousted by the current semi-benevolent dictator, Suharto.

Suharto's regime is coming to an end the way dictatorships do when they die of natural causes: student protests, strikes, demonstrations, rioting, looting.
