Indonesia is less a country than a small universe, the world's fourth most populous nation strewn across thousands of miles of islands.
Indonesia has never been a true democracy. It was a Dutch colony, and then ruled by one semi-benevolent dictator, Sukarno, who was ousted by the current semi-benevolent dictator, Suharto.
Suharto's regime is coming to an end the way dictatorships do when they die of natural causes: student protests, strikes, demonstrations, rioting, looting. The usual, but not inevitable, next step is violent over-reaction by the police and military. The Indonesian authorities seemed headed that direction when they killed six students ...
