JAKARTA, Indonesia -- One of the last of the world's Cold War strongmen, President Suharto ruled unchallenged in Indonesia for 32 years, dominating Indonesian society and tolerating little dissent.
During his reign over the nation of 17,000 islands, Suharto transformed an economy on the brink of ruin into an Asian Tiger - only to see Asia's economic crisis unravel his efforts and turn his people against him.
The 76-year-old retired five-star army general was Asia's longest-serving leader and enjoyed international and domestic favor through most of his rule.
