WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott said Thursday that President Clinton's veto of a ban on certain late-term abortions ``shocked the conscience of the nation,'' and he suggested the Senate is close to being able to override.
``We will not rest until the ban on partial-birth abortion becomes law - if not this year, then early in the next Congress with an expanded Republican majority,'' Lott, R-Miss., said in a letter to Republican National Committee chief Jim Nicholson.
Lott's letter, timed to coincide with the committee's winter meeting in California, did not directly address a divisive resolution expected ...
