CRANDALL OUT: Robert Crandall, 62, the highly respected but hardly beloved leader of American Airlines' parent company, will step down from the nation's second-largest airline after 18 years in charge.
Crandall innovated deep-discount fares and frequent-flier programs and built hub-and-spoke routing systems that often forced passengers to change planes. He also pioneered ways to estimate how many seats on each flight could be sold at a discount and how many at full fare.
