PHILADELPHIA -- The old ship on the Delaware River draws a trickle of weekday tourists, mostly school groups. Motorists on Columbus Boulevard speed past, all but oblivious to it.
The ship, the Olympia, shares dock space with a World War II submarine, the Becuna. The children are more interested in the sub.
The Olympia, built in San Francisco and launched in 1893, was the flagship of Adm. George Dewey, once a hero everyone knew.
Dewey achieved sudden fame by demolishing a Spanish fleet at Manila Bay, to open the Spanish-American War.
