Burkina Faso lies in the Sahel, the grasslands that stretch across central West Africa between the Sahara to the north and the coastal forests to the south. Its neighbours are Mali and Niger to the north and east, and Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin to the south. With an area of 274,000 [km.sup.2], Burkina is slightly smaller than the US state of Nevada.
Much of the country is formed by a low, lateritic plateau with an elevation of between 300 and 350 m. The plateau slopes gently to the south, with ranges of hills in the west, the southwest and to the north of Ouagadougou.
