When you work in the gang crimes unit in Elgin, where rivals can explode into violence on any given day, it's usually better to be knowledgeable than lucky.
But with less than a month left in 2000 and the number of homicides in Elgin at its lowest point in 22 years, Detective Jeff Adams is willing to ask for luck that things remain as peaceful.
Not only has Elgin had just one homicide this year, Adams points out, "We still haven't had a gang-related murder all year, knock on wood."
