GRAND CAYMAN -- I sit under a palm tree, sipping fresh rain water. My feet shift in the sand, which is white and warm. The sea is just beyond my toes. I'm carefully considering all the shades of blue arrayed before me. The colors of the water are unreal and cartoonish - saturated hues that I'd always assumed were somehow enhanced in magazine photos of the Caribbean. They're real.
The shallows radiate a neon greenish blue, and bands of white light dance on the sand underneath. Farther out, the color deepens with the water, glowing the purest shade of turquoise. The next band is dark blue where the ...
