People are always talking about how the middle class is vanishing. And it's nonsense.
Want evidence? In 1947, according to historian James Patterson, ``one-third of American homes had no running water, two-fifths had no flush toilets, three-fifths lacked central heat.'' So having such conveniences would have made you quite solidly middle class.
Now do you really believe that the many people who are said to be falling out of the middle class today are using outhouses and hauling water from a well? Of course not. Nor are they giving up their TVs, CDs or PCs. Therefore the middle class is not vanishing, at least not by the ...
